1st and 2nd XI continue good league form and MCC progress in Presidents Trophy

The 1st and 2nd XI win their ESCA league division 3 and division 6 matches on Saturday, whilst the 1st XIs result ensures MCC progress into the next round of the Presidents Trophy.

The XI, flying high at the top of division 3, defeated 4th placed Drummond Trinity at Loretto in a combined league/ Presidents Trophy round 2 fixture. Drummond Trinity won the toss and invited Musselburgh to bat. Musselburgh posted 245 all out off their 50 overs, Hemant Verma, this week shining with the bat, scored a brilliant 99 before being caught off the last ball of the innings whilst trying to reach the magical 100. Bhatkar bludgeoned an impressive 48 and there was also a useful contribution of 30 from Captain Kevin Dilly. 

In response Drummond Trinity posted 180 all out off 42.5 overs ensuring a comfortable 65 run victory for the 1st XI. Rizwan (super) Ullah was the pick of the Musselburgh bowlers taking 3 wickets for 27 runs off 10 overs. Rene Collins and Kamal Bhardwaj picked up 2 wickets a piece. The 1st XI retain there 100% record for the season so far and will be in confident mood for their next league fixture against West Lothian 2nd XI at Loretto this Saturday.

The 2nd XI took on the undefeated Old Contemptibles CC in their first home fixture of the season at Lewisvale Park. The OCCC won the toss and invited Musselburgh to bat in the glorious sunshine and surrounds of Lewisvale Park. The Musselburgh batsman shone scoring 230 off their 45 overs, Asim Ahmed top scoring with a career best 78 and fellow opening batsman Rohit Maini helping himself to a splendid 52. Other useful contributions with the bat included Howarth, 33 not out, Gatner 27 and Chandwani 23 not out.

In response OCCC managed 118 all out, after a very effective start to their innings. Akshay Chandwani was the pick of the Musselburgh attack with figures of 4 for 18 off 7 overs. Craighead and Benstead both picked up 2 wickets, with the final margin of victory 112 runs. The result lifts the 2nd XI to 3rd in division 6 league standings with an away fixture against the Cask and Barrel next Saturday.

MCC Progress in Parks Trophy

Musselburgh beat Bass Rock at Lewisvale Park in the first round of the Parks Trophy.

Bass Rock scored a decent 88 for the loss of seven wickets off their 20 overs. Collins the pick of the Musselburgh attack with 3 wickets. In response Musselburgh picked off the runs in 15.4 overs, Anderson not out on 41.

1st XI and 2nd XI win 23/05/09

Musselburgh 1st XI defeated Falkand 2nd XI at Loretto by 7 wickets. Falkland won the toss and chose to bat scoring 128 all out off 43.2 overs. Verma was again the pick of the Musselburgh bowlers taking 3 wickets for 25 runs off 9 overs. Anderson and Collins both took two wickets. The Musselburgh batsman reached their target off 28 overs, Barwadj scoring 53 before being caught behind. Bhatkar finished 41 not out.

Musselburgh 2nd XI defeated Livingston 2nd XI by 111 runs in this rearranged league fixture at Lewisvale Park. Livingston won the toss and invited Musselburgh to bat. The Musselburgh batsmen posted  a total of 187 for 3 off their 45 overs. Kumar and Howarth enjoyed a 112 run 4 wicket parnership. Kumar top scoring with 59 not out and Howarth finishing on 55 unbeaten. In response Livingston were 76 all out with Kamran Tufail the pick of the Musselburgh attack with 3 wickets. Robertson, Allen and Maini all picked up two Livingston wickets.

MCC progress in Terence Newcombe Trophy 19/05/09

The MCC defeated APNA by 9 wickets at the Meadows in the 1st round of the Terence Newcombe Trophy 20/20 cup competition. APNA were 88 all out in the 20th over, Verma and Gatner both with two wickets the pick of the Musselburgh bowlers. Anderson and Mehedevan picked off the runs at a quick rate before the latter was bowled for 28. Anderson finished on 38 not out as Musselburgh picked off the runs in 13 overs.

Musselburgh will face Morton in the next round of this cup.

1st XI win 2nd XI washed out

Musselburgh 1st XI defeated Dunniker by 9 wickets in a one sided league fixture at Loretto. Dunnikeir were bowled out for 78 in 43.5 overs, Verma was the pick of the Musselburgh attack with 4 Dunniker wickets. In reply the Musselburgh batsmen were 82 for 1 off 15.4 overs, Bhardwaj top scoring with 41 not out.

Musselburgh 2nd XIs league fixture against Stirling 3rd XI was eventually abondened after a 2nd rain stopage. At the time Musselburgh were  45 for 4 off 20 overs. Kumar and Martin both not out at the crease..

Saturday League Fixtures a wash out but MCC progress in the Presidents Cup

Both the 1st and 2nd XI league fixtures on Saturday 9th May were abandoned due to the rain.

The 1st XI had Grange 3s on the ropes at 55 for 4 off 18 overs before the heavens opened and the 2nd XI had Morton 2 for 1 off 7 before their match was stopped.

The MCC did manage to play their Sunday Presidents Cup fixture against Fauldhouse at Lewisvale.

The MCC won by 25 runs in a hard fought contest in what was a morale boosting result for the club.

The MCC play Drummond Trinity in the next round of this cup.

Mixed opening day for MCC

Musselburgh 1st XI started the ESCA division 3 in confident fashion with a 55 run win against Murrayfield DAFS 2nd XI at Loretto on Saturday. Club Captain Kevin Dilly led from the front with a brilliant opening day 66 with the bat with the hostile Mark Anderson claiming 4 DAFS wickets.

Musselburgh 2nd XI slumped to a shock opening day 6 wicket defeat to Penicuick 3rd XI in Penicuick in ESCA Division 6.

The 1st XI continue their season with a game against Grange 3rd XI at Lewisvale Park on Saturday with the 2nd XI hoping to get their season started with an away tie against Morton at the Meadows.

The 1st XI game starts at 1:00pm all suporters welcome.  

The MCC are also in Presidents Cup action on Sunday 10th May against ESCA Division 1 side Fauldhouse at Lewisvale Park. The match is scheduled to start 1pm, 40 overs per side. All supporters welcome.

Pre-Season Concluded

Musselburgh Cricket Club wraped up their pre-season friendly fixtures with the 1st XI beating Loretto at Loretto and the 2nd XI beating Edinburgh South at The Inch on Saturday 25th April.

The 1st XI begin ESCA Division 3 league action against Murrayfield DAFS 2nd XI at Loretto this Saturday .

The 2nd XI begin ESCA Division 6 league action against Penicuik 3XI in Peniuik, also this Saturday.

As a club we look forward to the coming season.
